Understanding Heart Health

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. This American Heart Month, we want you to understand the factors contributing to heart health and the steps for heart disease prevention. Regular check-ups, balanced diets, and physical activity are all actions that contribute to your heart’s health.

5 Tips for a Healthy Heart

  1. Balanced Diet: Incorporate heart-healthy foods into your diet. Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
  2. Quit Smoking: Smoking cessation is a significant step towards improving your cardiovascular health.
  3. Manage Stress: Chronic stress can negatively impact your heart. Try relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga. Beading is also a great activity that can rest your mind while keeping your hands busy. Just make sure if you are beading for a long period of time, you are taking breaks to stand and do light movement.
  4. Regular Health Screenings: Keep track of your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and other cardiovascular risk factors. Our pharmacy department is offering free blood pressure monitors and can help you understand your readings.
  5. Regular Exercise: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. The key is to find an activity that you enjoy. If you enjoy the activity you are more likely to stay consistent.
