Nearly three decades ago, the Coeur d’Alene Tribe recognized the importance of not only treating illness but providing preventative care through promoting overall wellness in the community. This vision led to the opening of the Wellness Center in 1998—a groundbreaking facility that expanded healthcare services beyond traditional medical care to include fitness, rehabilitation, and health education. The Wellness center quickly became a vital resource for individuals and families across the region.
It’s time for an update to ensure the building continues to meet the needs of our growing community while enhancing the spaces you already love.
What’s Changing?
The renovation will include:
- Expanded fitness areas with upgraded equipment
- New multi-purpose spaces for wellness programs, classes, and community events
- New Physical Therapy, Wellbriety and Teen space
- Updated locker rooms and changing areas
- Updated and improved pool area
- Better lighting, flooring, and air circulation
- Traditions and stories of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe thoughtfully integrated throughout the building to celebrate Coeur d’Alene (Schitsu’umsh) culture. One exciting example is the transformation of the lap pool area, which will reflect the ‘Coyote and Rock Monster’ story.
How Will This Affect Your Visits?
Our goal is to enhance the facility without compromising your access to the services and programs you rely on. To eliminate distributions for our patrons, we will be using a phased approach to construction. Walker Construction, who we have a long-standing relationship with, will begin the first phase of construction March 17th. This will begin with filling in the therapy pool area. Clear signage will be posted, and staff will be available to assist with directions.
We know that routine is important, and we’re working hard to minimize disruptions as much as possible. While construction is underway, certain areas of the facility may have adjusted access. Here’s what to expect:
- Phase 1 – Filling in the Therapy Pool
The first phase of renovations will begin with filling in the therapy pool area. This will likely be the loudest part of the construction process. To minimize disruption, we have scheduled the noisiest demolition work to take place during off-hours when the facility is typically closed. However, we want to be transparent—some noise may still carry into the hallways, locker rooms, and gym. As Phase 1 nears completion, updates to the Men’s Locker Room will begin. We’ll provide a 1-2 week notice before this work starts so you have time to empty your locker and prepare to use the family locker room, which will be temporarily assigned as the Men’s Locker Room. - Locker Room and Restroom Adjustments
Upgrades to these spaces—like those in Phase 1—will be completed in stages to allow for continued use. - Programs
Wellness Center programs including Physical Therapy, Wellbriety and Teen Services will resume as usual. If we need to modify or adjust schedules or programming, we will do our best to notify the community well in advance. - Alternative Fitness Spaces
To ensure continued access to fitness equipment, some machines may be relocated during renovations after Phase I. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, just ask a staff member. - Signage and Staff Assistance
Clear signs will be posted throughout the facility to help you navigate any temporary changes. Our team will also be available to answer questions and assist as needed.
